Visakhapatnam: Parvathipuram Manyam collector A. Shyam Prasad on Tuesday said pre-emptive measures have been taken to safeguard residents and manage potential flooding if cyclones and heavy rains affect the region. During a video conference on Tuesday, attended by state home and disaster management minister Vangalapudi Anita and various district officials, the collector provided updates on the situation and the district's preparedness.

He highlighted that the district is home to one major irrigation project and four medium-sized projects, all of which are currently operating within their capacity. However, with ongoing rainfall in the neighbouring state of Orissa, there is a heightened risk of increased water flow into the district's rivers.

In a proactive move, pregnant women from the villages of Marumula and Girishikara have been relocated to Garjini hostels for their safety. The collector also noted that two state roads, along with the Kuneru-Ramabhadrapuram road have suffered extensive damage and require immediate repairs. Proposals for these repairs have been submitted to the government. Additionally, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been placed on standby in Salur, ready to assist if the situation worsens.

District SP S. V. Madhav Reddy emphasised the need for heightened vigilance, as sudden overflow incidents have been reported in the Pachipenta, Saluru, and Komarada mandals. He sought elevation of culvert heights to prevent flooding and announced that police will restrict access to affected areas as a precautionary measure.
