Vijayawada: Rescue and relief operations were in full swing on Monday for the flood-hit people in Vijayawada and other regions pounded by heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and several ministers visited the affected areas, took stock of the situation and boosted rescue and relief efforts.

The death toll in rains and floods so far has risen to 19 while two persons were missing and their fate unknown, the state disaster management authority has stated.

Finance minister Payyavula Keshav said Vijayawada experienced heavy rainfall and floods in an unprecedented manner, the worst in the last 100 to 200 years.

However, road connectivity between Vijayawada and Hyderabad has been restored. The vehicles stranded for several hours have been allowed to proceed on NH-65 through the new bridge at Garikapadu in NTR district, officials said in the evening.

The state government set up 176 rehabilitation centres and accommodated 41,927 rain/flood-affected people. As many as 36 NDRF and SDRF teams were assisting assist the affected people day and night. NDRF teams rescued 21 stranded persons from the Krishna river floods at Kotikalapudi by using a chopper.

Nearly three lakh food packets as also drinking water packs have been given to the affected people in relief camps and five choppers pressed into service. The health department set up 171 medical camps so far in the present scenario.

Due to heavy rainfall, a road stretch of 1,808km belonging to the Roads and Buildings department has suffered damage. Paddy crop in 1.72 lakh hectares and horticulture crops in 14,959 hectares were inundated. The veterinary department set up 134 health camps and vaccinated 6,000 livestock. The affected people have been given contact toll free numbers of 112, 1070 and 18004250101 to seek more help.

Drones were used to deliver food, medicines and potable water to the stranded families in low-lying areas where even the boats and choppers could not reach. A trial run was done for drones at Vijayawada Collectorate involving three units, in the presence of the Chief Minister. On word from the CM, officials arranged to send 1.10 lakh apples and 90,000 bananas to the flood-hit areas and would organise 2.5 lakh more bananas in the next two days for distribution in the affected areas.

Agriculture minister Atchannaidu expressed concern as 200 milch buffaloes were washed away in the floods at Rayapudi Pedalanka of Thullur mandal in Guntur district.

Information minister Kolusu Parthasarathi chose to blame the previous government for the present situation, saying it had failed to ensure regular maintenance to the canals and the Budameru drain, resulting in growth of weeds. This caused obstruction to the free flow of water, he said. Textiles minister Savitha travelled by a boat to reach some flood-hit areas and assured the affected people “all help.”
