Safety and emergency workshop concludes in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: A two-day workshop focused on ‘Safety and Emergency Management in the Chemical Industry’ was conducted at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Learning and Development Centre. The event, organised by joint chief inspector of factories Sivashankar Reddy in collaboration with the factories department and the Society for Occupational Health and Safety (SOHS-AP), attracted 270 representatives from various chemical factories and pharmaceutical companies.
The workshop was presided over by Anant Barbadikar, managing director who shared his insights on the importance of safety protocols in the chemical sector. He emphasised that proactive measures are essential to mitigate risks associated with chemical manufacturing.
Ranjan Mohanty, chief general manager and incharge (works) of RINL, served as the guest of honour. He highlighted the critical role of collaboration between enforcement agencies and factory departments in ensuring safety within process industries.
In his keynote address, Sivashankar Reddy pointed out that there are approximately 165 chemical plants in the Visakhapatnam region. He noted that major accidents have occurred at two of these facilities, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future incidents.
Srinivas Rao, assistant vice president of Laurus Labs, introduced various topics that would be covered throughout the workshop, focusing on accident prevention strategies tailored for the industry.
K. Rama Subbarao, general manager of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) and president of SOHS-AP, addressed the audience regarding the implementation of a robust safety culture in chemical plants. He announced that training programmes featuring industry experts would soon be initiated across various districts to further promote safety awareness. The workshop also included a practical component where a mock drill was conducted at EPIL.
