Vijayawada: In an alleged security lapse at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam (SDMSD) temple atop Indrakiladri, a devotee filmed a video of the goddess Kanaka Durga idol inside the sanctum sanctorum and its premises, then uploaded it on social media.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Durga temple executive officer (EO) K.S. Rama Rao said, “An unidentified devotee who visited the temple for darshan on August 7 clandestinely recorded the video and uploaded it on social media.”

“The video came to our notice on August 9 (Friday), and after thoroughly reviewing the CCTV footage from the temple premises, we filed a complaint with Vijayawada police on the same day to identify the miscreants and punish them,” Rao said.

The EO stated that the temple authority would take stern action against the accused for hurting the sentiments of devotees by filming the temple sanctum sanctorum and uploading it on social media. “We suspect that the act was either intended to tarnish the temple’s image or to gain attention on social media,” Rao said.

He assured that the temple would intensify vigilance and improve frisking procedures to prevent devotees with mobile phones from entering the darshan queues at the temple. According to reports, the police investigating the complaint have taken three suspects into custody and booked them under cybercrime charges.
