Vijayawada: Minister for excise Kollu Ravindra warned that strict action would be taken against the violators of maximum retail price (MRP) rules and the illicit belt shops. During a review meeting held at the excise commissioner’s office in Mangalagiri on Thursday, the minister acknowledged the officials' efforts in transparently implementing the new liquor policy and allocating licenses to 3,396 liquor shops without disputes. However, he urged that recent allegations of MRP violations in liquor stores and mushrooming of belt shops should be addressed effectively.
Ravindra directed the officials to impose heavy fines on the violators and to revoke the shop licenses if necessary. “We have introduced the liquor policy to combat spurious liquor and protect the consumers’ health. We will not tolerate any adulteration in alcohol sales and are determined to completely eradicate belt shops,” he emphasised.
Currently, testing for extra-neutral alcohol is conducted based on six parameters, but the number will soon be increased to 13 to ensure public safety. The minister explained that the testing process would use gas chromatography, adhering to the guidelines set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The minister reiterated the government’s objective was to transform Andhra Pradesh into a state free from counterfeit alcohol, promising high-quality and affordable liquor for consumers. Additionally, he urged the establishment of de-addiction centers to control alcohol consumption effectively.
The meeting was attended by key officials including excise principal secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena, excise director Nishant Kumar, enforcement director Rahul Dev Sharma, additional commissioners, joint commissioners, deputy commissioners and excise superintendents.
