Vijayawada: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday made detailed enquiries into the washing away of the Tungabhadra Dam gate after its link snapped earlier in the day.

Naidu alerted officials and took constant updates from water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu and special chief secretary Sai Prasad on the dam's status and other public concerns. He advised officials to alert the people of the low-lying areas in the erstwhile Kurnool district.

Sai Prasad told the CM that it was an old gate that was not in use.

Naidu suggested sending a design team to the project site. Officials told the CM that the water was up to 6 metres high in the reservoir and steps were being taken to ensure that the water is preserved, not wasted, through stop lock arrangement.

The chief minister asked minister Payyavula Keshav to talk to Tungabhadra Dam officials about the setting up of a temporary gate. Keshav said there are difficulties in setting up the temporary stop lock gate because of its old design.

Minister Ramanaidu said a team of engineers and the central design commissioner have visited the spot. Collectors would alert the people of the low-lying areas. People of Kauthalam, Kosgi, Mantralayam and Nandavaram areas have been asked to be vigilant.
