Vijayawada: Bapatla district holds a special place in Telugu language and literature history, stated Bapatla district collector J. Venkata Murali at a Telugu Language Day event organised by the Forum for Better Bapatla. During the celebrations collector Murali paid homage by garlanding the statue of Telugu Talli near the tahsildar’s office.

In his address, collector Venkata Murali emphasised the significant contributions of Gidugu Rama Murthy Pantulu and highlighted the Addanki inscription found in the district as evidence of a rich Telugu literary tradition that predates many existing texts. He noted that this inscription features the earliest known poem written in Telugu.

Murali also underscored Bapatla’s role as the birthplace of the term 'Telugu Talli,' originally coined by poet Rayaprolu Subba Rao. He mentioned that Yerrapragada, one of the 'Trinity of Poets' who wrote the 'Andhra Mahabharatam,' came from Bapatla and served as the court poet for the Addanki Reddy kingdom. He reminisced about the contributions of the great poet Srinadha, known for popularising the prabandha style of composition and serving as a minister in the Addanki Reddy court.

Bapatla MLA V. Narendra Varma highlighted that the district was also the birthplace of the 'Linguistic States Policy,' with its groundwork laid during the First Andhra Conference held in Bapatla in 1913.

The event also honoured Telugu poet Ramaswamy Reddy. Forum Secretary Dr. P. C. Sai Babu, district revenue officer Satti Babu, Bapatla RDO G. Ravinder and Bapatla Tahsildar G. Sridevi were present.
