Tungabhadra Dam likely to have full water storage

Anantapur: After fixing the Stop Log gates at the 19th gate, the Tungabhadra dam has been improving its storage capacity. It recorded 75.13tmc-ft at 1624.58-ft water level, as against the maximum capacity of 105tmc-ft on Monday, officials said.
The inflows were of 37,687 cusecs while the outflows were only 10,275 cusecs, which was discharged towards dependent HLMC, LLC and other branch canals of the dam.
“The dam is expected to get another 25tmc-ft by the end of this month. If heavy floods occur in upstream Western ghats, the dam may get filled in a short time,” dam engineers said.
Notably, after the 19th gate was washed away in the flow of floodwaters after its chain got delinked, at least 35tmc-ft of water went waste, as this much had to be released into the river in a week’s time. At the time of damage to the gate, the water level was maintained at 101tmc-ft in the reservoir. The water level is improving now and it recorded 75.13tmc-ft on Monday.
Compared to last year, the inflows were good this year. On the same day last year, the inflow was 587 cusecs while this year it was 37,000 cusecs. The dam authorities hope the reservoir will get its full storage this time.
Meanwhile, Rayadurg MLA Kalava Sreenivasulu and Kalyandurg MLA Surendra Babu visited TB dam and stated, “We are seeking the presence of designer expert Kannaiah Naidu in Anantapur as he saved crops over hundreds of crores of acres and ensured drinking water for Rayalaseema and Karnataka parts.
