Vijayawada Customs seizes smuggled gold worth Rs 14.3 crore, 16 arrested

Vijayawada: Sixteen persons including a woman were arrested for smuggling over 17 kilograms of foreign-origin gold here in the district.
The Customs Preventive Commissionerate here seized 17.90 kgs of smuggled gold worth Rs 14.37 crore in a coordinated operation that lasted three days.
The seized gold was reportedly smuggled from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It was also revealed that smugglers made efforts to erase the markings on the metal to hide its foreign origin.
Moreover, the accused were caught at three different locations in the city such as Tadipatri Railway Station, Nellore Railway Station, and Bollapalli Toll Plaza. All the 16 were remanded to judicial custody as per the law.
Customs Commissioner Sadhu Narasimha Reddy, praising efforts of the officials, urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to help curb illegal trade.
