AI-powered traffic management system in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: The city police are set to revolutionize traffic management with the implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI) system that will enhance both traffic control and crime prevention capabilities. The pilot project will leverage AI technology to identify criminals and track traffic violators. The system is designed to automatically issue challans for violations and send immediate alerts to the nearest Station House Officer (SHO) in case of accidents or disturbances on the road.

In a conversation with the Deccan Chronicle, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K Praveen Kumar revealed that the department has initiated a pilot project to integrate AI technology into the city's traffic management infrastructure.

He elaborated on the integrated nature of the system, stating that it will include a comprehensive database of known criminals. When an individual with a criminal record crosses a designated signal point, the AI will recognize their face and promptly notify police officials. This feature aims to act as a deterrent against criminal activities and enhance public safety.

The AI-driven traffic management system will also feature intelligent traffic lights that adapt their timing based on real-time traffic conditions. This innovation is expected to improve vehicle throughput and significantly reduce waiting times at intersections.

He also briefed about the Challan process, stating that the AI-powered system will automatically generate and send challans (traffic tickets) to violators while simultaneously alerting the nearest Station House Officer (SHO) about accidents or roadside altercations.

As part of the implementation process, various companies are being consulted to conduct ground reports on optimal locations for camera installations and signal placements. Once these reports are evaluated, the best recommendations will be forwarded to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and subsequently to the state government for final approval.

Ravi Eswarapu, CEO of AI Skill Hub at Andhra University, highlighted additional benefits of the system. "If someone involved in criminal activities moves from Hyderabad to Vizag, the system can detect their presence through traffic cameras and alert the nearest control room," he said. The technology will also automate the detection of various traffic violations, including triple riding, red light violations, and helmet law infractions.

While the system promises improved safety and efficiency, he highlighted some considerations for the public. Vehicle owners will be held responsible for any violations committed while their vehicles are being used by others, emphasizing the importance of responsible lending practices.

He further emphasized that the initiative represents a significant step forward in urban management, combining traffic control with law enforcement capabilities. Despite potential adjustment challenges for drivers, authorities believe the system's benefits in enhancing public safety and reducing crime rates will ultimately outweigh any initial difficulties.
