Visakahapatnam: A premature baby initially declared dead at KGH was found to be alive while being handed over to the family, leading to immediate medical intervention and a dramatic shift from grief to joy for the parents.
The incident occurred on Friday evening when a couple arrived at KGH after the mother's water broke. Due to the extremely premature stage of pregnancy at 25 weeks, doctors performed an emergency procedure. Initially, medical staff detected a heartbeat, but the baby showed no signs of life shortly after, leading them to declare the infant deceased and record it in hospital records.
However, the baby suddenly showed signs of life while being handed over to the father. The father immediately alerted medical staff, who rushed the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for treatment.
Dr. Sandhya, Head of the Gynaecology Department at KGH, while having a conversation with Deccan Chronicle said that, "At 25 weeks, this was technically considered an abortion rather than a delivery, as survival rates typically improve only after 28 weeks of gestation." She confirmed that while the initial assessment showed no signs of life, the baby was found to be breathing during the handover process.
The hospital atmosphere transformed from one of sorrow to celebration as family members gathered around the surviving infant. The medical team is now monitoring the baby's condition in the NICU.
