Visakhapatnam: Vizag MP Mathukumilli Sribharat told Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw the need to preserve the Waltair division in its current configuration within the proposed South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone, when both of them met on Wednesday. He explained its historical significance and contribution to freight revenue generation.

Emphasising the division's administrative and cultural relevance to the residents of North Andhra, he requested the ministry to re-evaluate plans to bifurcate the division. The MP also compared metros such as Mumbai and Kolkata, where multiple railway divisions operate concurrently.
He also urged the minister to expedite operation for zonal headquarters. He cited examples in the East Coast and South Western Railways, which began operations with temporary arrangements before transitioning to permanent facilities. The MP also proposed a daily direct train service linking Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru and introducing a Vande Bharat between Visakhapatnam and Tirupati.
He also sought an additional stoppage for Vande Bharat trains at Duvvada station. He said the station serves pivotal areas such as Gajuwaka, Lankelapalem, and the Steel Plant Township.
