Vijayawada: In a groundbreaking move, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has introduced mesh nets to prevent plastic and other waste from polluting canals and flowing into the sea. This innovative pilot project, implemented in the Eluru and Budameru canals, has proven effective in reducing debris and water contamination.
VMC Biologist Surya Kumar explained that the mesh nets, installed at Eluru locks on the Eluru canal and upstream at Jakkampudi on the Budameru canal, are designed to collect trash at source. This prevents waste from travelling downstream into Kolleru Lake and the sea. He highlighted that VMC is the first municipal corporation in India to adopt this cost-effective method, spending only Rs 30 lakh on installation at Eluru locks under the supervision of Commissioner Dhyanachandra.
The project employs indigenous technology, offering a low-cost solution compared to similar initiatives abroad that require significant investment. Regular clearing of collected trash is conducted using the advanced Truxor machine, ensuring that microplastics do not pollute water bodies. This is crucial as canal water is often used for drinking and irrigation by residents in nearby villages.
The setup includes a two-metre underwater mesh and floating pipes on the surface, effectively trapping debris. Encouraged by the pilot project's success, VMC plans to expand this initiative to the Bandar and Ryves canals, aiming to keep water bodies clean and free from pollution. This pioneering effort sets an example for other municipalities across the country.
