MANGALURU: In a swift operation, Kankanady police rescued a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who was kidnapped and reunited her with her parents within two hours of receiving the complaint.

The incident took place on Aug 31, when the child, the daughter of laborers working at the garden of the Forest Department at Alape-Padil, went missing at around 4.30 pm.

The parents who searched for the child finally reported it to the Kankanady police at 7.30 pm.

Immediately, the police sprang into action, alerting the officials. Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the Mangaluru junction railway station, they noticed an elderly man walking away with the child.

The Kankanady police immediately informed the Kasaragod Railway Police about a train headed toward Kerala. The suspect, along with the child, was apprehended by the railway police at 9.30 pm, and the Kankanady police team, led by PSI Shivakumar, returned the child to her parents later that night.

Police said that the accused, Aneesh Kumar (49), hailing from Thathappilly, Paravur in Ernakulam district of Kerala reportedly had a quarrel at home and was traveling back to Mumbai to visit his mother. During the investigation, it was revealed that he saw the child playing by the roadside near the botanical garden and, having three sons of his own, desired to raise a girl child. He then kidnapped the child.

Following his arrest, Aneesh Kumar was remanded to judicial custody.
