Mangaluru: Health and Family Welfare Minister and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao visited flood and rain-affected areas in the district on Friday to assess the damage and address local concerns.
During his visit, the minister interacted with residents, listened to their demands, and assured them of the government's support. He directed officials to promptly address the issues raised by the community.
Expressing concern over a mudslide at Kettikal on the outskirts of Mangaluru, the minister announced the formation of a technical committee to investigate the incident, as well as the flooding in areas near Adyapady.
“Residents of Adyapady have reported that flooding is caused by the backwater of a check dam, and they are seeking a permanent solution. Additionally, we have observed a mudslide here in Kettikal. The technical committee will thoroughly examine both issues,” the minister informed reporters at the site.
The minister also revealed plans for a high-level inquiry into the extraction of soil at Kettikal.
"At first glance, there appear to be some lapses. Large amounts of soil have been mined under the guise of National Highway work. We need to investigate how the City Corporation managed the situation and how the Mines and Geology Department permitted the extraction of soil from the hill. A high-level inquiry will be initiated," he declared.
He added that further details about the inquiry process would be shared soon.
Preliminary estimates indicate a loss of Rs 200 crore to roads and electricity in the district due to the recent heavy rains and flooding.
