Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Police officials have filed a B report in connection with the case against people who offered Namaz on the street in Mangaluru. The police inspector who initiated the suo motu case has been placed on compulsory leave pending enquiry.
On May 28 a suo motu case was registered at Mangaluru East Police Station under IPC Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 283 (danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation), 143 (unlawful assembly), and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of an offense committed in prosecution of a common object). The case was filed against unidentified individuals for allegedly obstructing pedestrians and disrupting the free flow of vehicles.
However, on May 30, the police issued a new press statement stating that a B report had been submitted as there was no intention to obstruct traffic or pedestrians in the Namaz incident.
Additionally, the suo motu case was filed without informing senior officials, leading to the Mangaluru East Police Inspector being placed on compulsory leave. An inquiry has been ordered, led by an ACP-grade officer.
Meanwhile, the police have also registered a case against a post from the Facebook account of Sharan Pumpwell Mangaluru. The post stated that direct action would be taken if such incidents (Namaz on the street) recurred. The police have considered this post as inciting enmity among people and creating societal fear. Consequently, a case has been registered against the post for potentially disturbing communal harmony in the region.
