Mangaluru: Three men drowned in the Arabian Sea near Hosabettu beach in Surathkal near Mangaluru on Tuesday, while one of their friends was rescued by local fishermen.

The deceased have been identified as Manjunath S from Chitradurga, Shivakumar Matapati from Vijayapura, and Sathyavelu Venkatesan from Tamil Nadu (presently settled in Bengaluru). Their friend, Parameshwar from Bidar, was rescued by local fishermen Vidhyadhar and others.
According to police the group of friends, all former students of AMC Engineering College in Bengaluru, had planned a trip to Mangaluru. They left Bengaluru on January 7 night in a car and reached Mangaluru on January 8 morning. After exploring the city, they visited Hosabettu Beach in Surathkal, about 15 km from Mangaluru, at around 12.30 pm.
The police added that the friends entered the sea to swim, unaware of the depth and the strong currents. While Parameshwar was pulled to safety, the other three were swept away. Their bodies were later recovered.
