Kakinada: BJP’s Kakinada unit on Thursday held the Independence Day celebrations at the historic Gandhinagar park here, where the AICC held its general body meeting in 1923.

District party president Ramkumar unfurled the national flag at the Mahatma Gandhi statue. He advocated a corruption-free society.

Another leader D Subrahmanyam said 12,000 representatives had participated in the 1923 AICC meeting held over a vast stretch of 120 acres of land belonging to Pithapuram Raja. Muhmmad Ali Jinnah presided over the meeting.

“Mahatma Gandhi did not attend the meeting as he was lodged in the central prison at Yerwada in Maharashtra. His wife Kasturba Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Motilal Nehru, Tanguturi Prakasm, Duvvuri Subbamma, Mosaliganti Tirumala Rao and Bikkina Venkata Ratnam were among those present,” he said

He said, “At that event, Durgabhai Deshmukh won the attention of Jawaharlal Nehru as she allowed him to the meeting only after paying the delegate fees.”

Subrahmaniam paid tributes to Maharshi Bulusu Sambamurthy, who welcomed the delegates to the meeting and made it a success though his son died of a snake bite that day.

BJP leaders Y Malakondaiah, G Satyanarayanaand, Godi Satyavati and others were present at the I-Day meeting.
