Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the passing of Sitaram Yechury is a significant loss to Indian democracy and secular politics in general, and to the revolutionary movement of the working class.

In his condolence message, the Chief Minister expressed that it was with deep sorrow and immense pain that he learned of the passing of our beloved Yechury. He was a Marxist ideologue par excellence. As the General Secretary of the party for the last nine years, he had been leading the party and steering it ahead through some of its most challenging times.

Yechury was convinced that for Indian democracy to sustain, its secular-federal character must be protected and that all sections of the people in the country should have an equal say in managing its affairs, he said.

The chief minister said the CPI(M)'s stance on issues such as the revocation of Article 370, CAA, electoral bonds, and his battles to advance these causes as the party's General Secretary, even at the level of the Supreme Court, underscored that conviction.

As far as the LDF government in Kerala was concerned, we could always rely on his guidance and support over the last eight years. In his absence, it will be sorely missed, he added.

"I consider it a personal privilege to have been able to work with Sitaram Yechury in the central committee and politburo of the CPM. Even amidst personal losses, he always remained committed to the responsibilities the party and society had entrusted upon him.

His departure is not just a deep personal loss, but also a great loss to the Indian and international communist movements as well," Pinarayi said.
