Chennai is bracing for heavy rainfall today, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for several districts in Tamil Nadu. In response to the forecast, all schools in Chennai have been closed for the day.

The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert for districts including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Puducherry, with isolated places expected to receive heavy rainfall.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai forecasts moderate to heavy rain, along with thunderstorms, due to an active system over the Bay of Bengal. The temperature in Chennai is expected to range from 25°C to 33°C. Heavy rains will begin around 9:30 am, with continued downpours expected throughout the day. Local weather sources, such as Chennai Rains (COMK), have warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to the likelihood of traffic disruptions.

Beyond Chennai, other parts of South India are also set to experience heavy rainfall. Districts like Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, and Karaikal, along with neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, are expected to witness significant rainfall over the coming days. The IMD has issued similar alerts for these areas, advising people to stay indoors and avoid travel where possible to minimize the risk of flooding and other weather-related hazards.
