Chennai: The State government warned media houses, individuals and social media influencers against speculating on the outcome of the investigations, carried out by the all women Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the sexual assault of a student inside Anna University campus on December 23, as misleading information could have severe consequences on the individuals involved and might undermine the integrity of the investigation process.

In a statement on Saturday, the government said some news channels and social media platforms had claimed that the ‘victim girl has given statement before the SIT narrating about accused allegedly speaking to one SIR, that “SIT has allegedly seized electronic gadgets from accused which is claimed to have contained obscene contents of the victim girl” and that “one person from Tiruppur is allegedly also identified as accused in the case”.

Clarifying that the SIT or any other competent authority had not issued any statement or commented to any individual or media about the progress of the investigation, the government said: ‘The information and contents being circulated in public domain about the developments and progress of the investigation of the cases by SIT is completely false and without any basis.’

The baseless and speculative information about the investigation of the cases by SIT not only created confusion among the public but also had the potential to adversely affect the free and fair investigation process, it said.

The SIT headed by Bhukya Sneha, Deputy Commissioner Of Police, Anna Nagar, Chennai was constituted to investigate the cases in connection with sexual assault of girl student at Anna University as per the orders of the Madras High Court.
