Former Sub-Poster in Chennai gets 2 years RI for misappropriation of funds

Chennai: The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Chennai, has sentenced V.C.Dhanalakshmi, the then Sub Post Master, Thiruvalangadu Sub-Post Office at Thiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu to undergo two years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Rs.50,000 in a case related to misappropriation of funds of Postal Department and causing loss to the government exchequer.

A case was registered by CBI on December 29, 2016 against Dhanalakshmi on the allegations that during 2006 to 2011, she misappropriated funds of Postal Department amounting to Rs.30.91 lakh by reviving and closing already closed Postal Recurring Deposits Accounts of various account holders and also by part withdrawal from Recurring Deposits (RD) accounts of various post office account holders without their knowledge.

It was also alleged that false entries were made in the system, creating false and fabricated vouchers, etc. The CBI filed chargesheet against accused on July 29, 2017 after completion of investigation. It was found during investigation by CBI that Dhanalakshmi during the period from April 12, 2007 to April 29, 2011 abused her official position and committed multiple frauds to the tune of Rs.38.81 lakh from 191 RD of various deposits by closure/repeated closure/part withdrawals by forging the signatures or LTIs of original depositors or by putting signatures in fictitious names without the knowledge of the actual account holders.

The accused fraudulently withdrew money from the government account under the head RD withdrawal. After trial, the court held accused guilty and sentenced her accordingly.
