The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, predicting light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next three days, starting December 24. The adverse weather is attributed to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, which is set to influence the region significantly.
As of Monday, the depression was situated approximately 500 km east of Chennai, moving in a southwest direction. The system is expected to weaken as it progresses southward, with landfall anticipated near Tamil Nadu’s Delta districts on December 26. Following this, the depression will traverse the state and head towards the Arabian Sea.

IMD forecasts indicate that Chennai, Puducherry, and Karaikal will experience intermittent light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms during this period. Chennai and surrounding areas are likely to receive moderate rainfall on December 24 and 25, with light fog expected in the early mornings.
The department also predicts widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu on December 26 and 27, as the weakening system continues to influence weather patterns. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and prepare for potential disruptions due to the changing weather conditions.
