Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Sowmiya Anbumani and several party members were arrested on Thursday for attempting to stage a protest defying police restrictions. The protest, organized by the PMK women’s wing, was in response to the recent sexual assault of an Anna University student.

Though the Chennai Police denied permission to organise the protest, the PMK decided to proceed with the demonstration. Anticipating the protest, additional police personnel were deployed at the site.

As Sowmiya Anbumani and other PMK members took to the streets, they were promptly detained and removed by the police, according to local media reports. The arrests occurred within moments of the protest's commencement.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the case, with the PMK demanding swift justice and greater safety measures for women.
