Chennai: Global Communist icon, Karl Marx, would be honoured with a statue of his erected in Chennai, the city that witnessed a vibrant trade union movement more than a century ago, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced in the State Assembly on Thursday.

Making the announcement, along with another on the construction of a memorial for veteran Forward Bloc leader P K Mookiah Thevar at this native Usilampatti, under Rule 110, Stalin said Karl Marx was the one who gave the clarion call for workers unity through his proclamation, ‘Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose other than your chains.’

On Marx, Stalin said that he wrote rightly about India at a time when no one else bothered about the country but had raised the hope of the country emerging as a powerful nation.
