22 Dengue Cases Reported in Five Days in GHMC

 Hyderabad: Twentytwo cases of dengue were reported in the GHMC limits covering Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts in the first five days of August, according to data shared by Hyderabad district medical and health officer Dr J. Venkati.

In July, Hyderabad recorded 230 dengue cases, the highest for this year so far. From January to date, Hyderabad district reported a total of 571 dengue cases. Comparatively, there were 810 cases in August 2023 and 312 in July 2023.

Rangareddy has reported five cases from municipality regions so far in August, according to Dr B. Venkateswar Rao, district medical and health officer. The district had 66 cases in July, with 46 from GHMC limits, 19 from municipalities, and one from rural Rangareddy.

The GHMC, meanwhile, reported last week that it received 626 cases across all its limits (Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, and Medchal) in July. The GHMC also announced new efforts to prevent vector-borne diseases, noting 786 cases in July 2023.

Fever Hospital in Nallakunta reported 75-80 dengue cases in July, according to CSRMO Dr A. Jayalaxmi. “Most of the cases can be treated at home for symptoms like fever. We admit patients if their platelet count is between 80,000 and 1 lakh.”

“Any patient with a count below 50,000 is usually referred to Osmania General Hospital. So far, we have not received any such cases, nor have we had patients with complications. Pregnant women with dengue are referred to OGH if they exhibit bleeding manifestations; otherwise, they are treated here," she said.

The state received 1,345 dengue cases from July 1 to July 29, 2024, as reported by Dr Ravindra Nayak, Director of Public Health, last week. This is up from 728 cases in the same period in 2023. The National Sector for Vector Borne Disease Control (NCVBDC) website shows around 1,074 cases from January to June this year.

Gastroenteritis and viral fever cases have also spiked in the past month. Fever Hospital is receiving 11-12 cases daily, compared to 22 cases daily in the first two weeks of July. In Rangareddy, there were 1,181 fever cases in July, with 313 from GHMC limits. Acute diarrhea, including gastroenteritis cases, totalked 100, with 70 of them from rural Rangareddy.
