Hyderabad: The HMWS&SB sewerage tunneling project between Basheerbagh and Nampally to address the recurring sewage overflow issues is entering its final phase, sources told Deccan Chronicle. The tunnel, part of a five-km pipeline plan, is designed to divert wastewater to the Amberpet sewage treatment plant.

The 600-metre section between Basheerbagh and Nampally has been particularly challenging due to the dense urban layout and heavy traffic. To minimise surface disruptions, the pipeline is being laid underground using advanced tunnelling techniques.

The work began in 2007 but was stalled after facing hard rock, which gradually increased construction time and costs. Despite completing 4.4 km of the overall tunnel system, the original contractor left the project incomplete.

Once operational, sources said, this underground sewerage tunnel will prevent wastewater from mixing with open drains and flooding the streets in Basheerbagh, Nampally, Himayatnagar, Narayanguda and surrounding areas.

The tunnel will is expected to reduce sewage complaints in these zones while contributing to cleaner roads and better urban hygiene.
