Biotech Bodies Fete Dr Soumya for TB Fight

HYDERABAD: Dr Soumya Swaminathan, clinical scientist who played a critical role in the global fight against tuberculosis (TB) and Covid-19, was honoured with the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) lifetime achievement award at a ceremony hosted by the University of Hyderabad (UoH).

The award, presented by UoH Vice Chancellor Prof. B.J. Rao, recognised her contributions to medical research and public health, particularly in combating TB and HIV/AIDS.

Dr Swaminathan, delivering the golden jubilee distinguished lecture at the UoH, she shared her perspectives from decades of work in public health. She discussed parallels between tuberculosis and Covid-19, diseases that have posed enduring challenges to health systems worldwide and global responses to these pandemics.

Her career, which includes serving as chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO), has focused on shaping public health policy and advancing medical research, particularly in tackling infectious diseases. She now serves as principal adviser for the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme under the Union health ministry.
