Hyderabad: Chilkalguda police briefly arrested BRS MLAs Maganti Gopinath and Dr K. Sanjay and former legislator Dr Metuku Anand, and party activists who tried to enter Gandhi Hospital on Monday as part of a ‘fact-finding committee’ to study maternal and infant deaths at the hospital.

Police shifted them to the Narayanguda police station from where they were later released.

Earlier in the day, police reached the houses of Dr Sanjay, Dr Anand and former MLA Dr T. Rajaiah to prevent them for reaching the hospota. Two of them managed to reach the hospital and were detained.

“This is injustice, I don’t understand why the police have taken us into custody," Gopinath said in a video which he recorded in a police patrol car on the way to the Narayanguda police station. He said the team was going to the hospital to ascertain the facts and give suggestions to the government.

Later, Dr Rajaiah, speaking to the media with Dr Sanjay, and Dr Anand, said, “We did not go to Gandhi to sit on a dharna or a protest. The Congress government is acting in a dictatorial fashion. How long does it think it can suppress us and the facts?”

He said that ever since the Congress came to power, healthcare has suffered and the state was in the grip of viral fevers. He asked the government to declare a health emergency in the state.
