HYDERABAD: Chilkalguda police registered cases against both the patient attendant and the postgraduate (PG) doctor following an altercation inside Gandhi Hospital that triggered protests by junior doctors on Monday.

Police booked the attendant for allegedly attacking an on-duty PG doctor, while the attendant also filed a complaint alleging that the doctor assaulted her during an argument inside the ward.
The incident led junior doctors at Gandhi Hospital to boycott regular duties and confine themselves to only emergency, demanding better security and installation of CCTV cameras in wards.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a first-year female PG doctor from the general medicine department, who was present during the incident, said the dispute began after a female attendant repeatedly approached doctors to check her mother’s glucose levels.
“The patient wanted to eat a cookie and the attendant kept asking us to check sugar levels. One of our PG doctors checked it three times and informed her. However, she continued recording videos inside the ward despite repeated warnings,” the doctor alleged.
According to the doctors, the PG doctor later took the attendant’s phone and handed it to a nurse asking her to stop recording. “As he took the phone, she slapped him hard, his spectacles broke and he suffered scratches on his head,” the doctor claimed.
“Last year we had protested seeking CCTV cameras in the ward. Security staff are also not enough,” the protesting doctors said.
Meanwhile, the attendant’s husband, Robin Zaccheus, claimed the medico-legal case report proves her hand was twisted and she sustained injuries. PG doctors are making false allegations that she slapped a doctor, he said.
He added that the family was willing to compromise after discussions with the director of medical education and the Gandhi hospital superintendent, but demanded that the doctors first withdraw the police complaint filed against the attendant.
