Hyderabad police nabs 148 people for selling Chinese manja

Hyderabad: In a drive against prohibited Chinese manja, seven special teams of city police raided several places in different zones and arrested 148 persons. “They were found indulging in illegal business of selling and purchasing Chinese manja,” the police said adding that they seized the banned glass-coated thread worth Rs 90 lakh from them.

"The use of Chinese manja (synthetic nylon string coated with abrasive materials like powdered glass or metal) poses significant risks to public safety, wildlife and the environment. Despite bans in several regions, its availability and use during kite festivals and other events continue to raise serious concerns, " Hyderabad police commissioner C.V. Anand said.

“There were previous incidents of death of a person due to the use of Chinese manja for kites and it is a severe threat not only to human life but hazardous to birds, animals,” Anand said.

“Keeping in view of the past experiences and incidents in advance, we conducted a coordination meeting with zonal heads of task force and law and order and formed seven special teams in advance,” the police commissioner added
