Hyderabad: St. George’s Grammar School celebrates 190th anniversary

Hyderabad:Thousands of students, present and retired staff and the alumni celebrated the 190th anniversary of St. George’s Grammar School at Gunfoundry, one of the oldest in the city, on Friday. A souvenir was released, narrating the journey of the school, established in 1834 to educate the children of British officers.

In the years since, the school has played an illustrious role in the history of Hyderabad by producing several stalwarts. Underscoring the British connection, Friday event saw the UK children performing in the group dance.

Anya Jerusha Gardner of 3A, Prefect of Jasper house, was among those who welcomed Rev. Prof. Dr Rueben Mark, Bishop In-charge, CSI Diocese of Medak. He released the souvenir and spoke about how an honest institution nurtures great leaders and citizens who usher in impactful change.

Prof. Dr B. Vimal Sukumar, warden and correspondent, gave prizes to outstanding students, Syeda Farida from girls' school and Syed Zeshan Quadri from boys’ school. Students roared with shouts of praise, when the recently retired principal, Marlin Ester, was being felicitated.

The campus was brightly lit, the campus of seven-and-half acres having a prep school, schools and junior colleges for girls and boys, a degree college and PG college for women. All the grounds were jam-packed.

Aruna Bahuguna, retired DGP and alumnus, said, “The students were given the best of education, which helped them choose what they want in life, to be good and contributing citizens to the nation.”

Jayashree Damisetty, an alumnus, said, “The school gave us a strong foundation. The curriculum involved assigning duties to the students. This is where they get the management skills and leadership qualities from the early stages.”

The principals and staff said the school placed importance on sports and games. “Our students bring laurels at state and national-level events. Aligned with our motto 'Perseverance Conquers All,' students are encouraged and made aware of the importance of knowledge and skills, which are emphasised in their daily classes," they said.
