Hyderabad Teenager Karthikey Becomes Youngest Indian to Summit Mount Vinson in Antarctica

Vishwanath reached the summit on December 3, 2024, as part of the Boots and Crampons-Elite Exped team, led by the dynamic mountaineer Nirmal Purja, and safely returned to base camp. This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of his parents, Padakanti Rajendera Prasad and Padakanti Laxmi and his grandparents, who have been his pillars of strength throughout his mountaineering journey.

His mother, in particular, has worked tirelessly to ensure he could pursue his dreams. Her belief that doing what you love leads to a fulfilling and successful life has been a guiding force in Vishwanath's journey. Under the guidance and mentorship of Bharath and Lt. Romil Barthwal, an Indian Army veteran, Vishwanath has been honing his climbing skills for the past four years.

This milestone is a testament to his perseverance, dedication, and disciplined training. Vishwanath embarked on his journey on November 21 from Hyderabad and reached Punta Arenas, Chile, on November 22. After thorough preparation and briefings with Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions, the team flew to Union Glacier on November 25.

After acclimatizing and planning their climb, they moved to the Vinson Massif base camp. Braving challenging weather conditions, Vishwanath successfully scaled the peak and achieved this remarkable milestone. His achievement adds to an already impressive list of summits, which include: Denali (North America), Elbrus (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa), Kosciuszko (Australia), Island Peak (Nepal), Kang Yatse I & II (India), Dzo Jongo (India), Friendship Peak (India), Kala Pathar and Everest Base Camp.

Speaking on this achievement, his mentors, Bharath and Lt. Romil Barthwal, expressed their pride, noting that Vishwanath’s journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and resilience. “This is not just about climbing mountains but building character and preparing for challenges in life,” they said.

Vishwanath is now gearing up for Aconcagua (South America) in January and the ultimate mountaineering challenge, Mount Everest (Asia), in May 2025, aiming to complete the prestigious Seven Summits Challenge.

His accomplishment is a source of immense pride for India and an inspiration to young climbers across the nation. Vishwanath’s journey reflects the spirit of adventure, determination, and the will to conquer the impossible.
