NIZAMABAD: Water flow to River Godavari has started in Nizamabad district, following the rains in the river’s catchment areas. Water from Nizamabad, Nirmal and Nanded district coursed through the river.
Kandakurthi, confluence of River Godavari and its tributaries Manjeera and Haridra witnessed substantial water flow. Due to the summer, the river had remained dry at Kandakurthi in recent months.
However, water inflows into the Sriramsagar project has also increased in the last few days.
The water level in the Sriramsagar project was at 1060.90 feet against its full reservoir level of 1091.00 ft. The present storage of water is at 11.44tmc. On the same day last year, it was 16.265tmc.
For the last 24 hours, the average inflows of 1620 cusecs reached the Sriramsagar project.
In the current season from June 1, 2024, 5.330tmc of water reached the Sriramsagar project and the outflows stood at 1.409tmc. The evaporation loss was 238 cusecs, while the drinking water needs of Korutla, Jagtial, Adilabad, Nirmal, Armoor, Nizamabad and Kamareddy district were of 231 cusecs considered as outflows.
There is no water release for the Kakatiya main canal, the Laxmi canal, Alisagar, the Gutpa lift irrigation schemes and the flood- flow canal. Merely 10 cusecs of water was released into the Saraswathi canal. The total average outflows was 479 cusecs.
If heavy rains lashed Maharashtra, River Godavari will get copious inflows from upstream areas and the Sriramsagar project will be filled. After the opening of the Babli project’s gates in Maharashtra, the water flow in River Godavari continued and it reached the Sriramsagar project.
SRSP officials were monitoring the water flow in River Godavari with their counterparts in Maharashtra. They are hopeful that SRSP will flood by August and reach its full reservoir level. “There is no scarcity of water for drinking purposes in undivided Nizamabad, Adilabad and Karimnagar districts, as the SRSP will ensure adequate water supply,” they explained.
