Jishnu Dev Varma takes oath as Telangana Governor

Hyderabad: Jishnu Dev Varma, former deputy chief minister of Tripura, took oath of office as the new Governor of Telangana on Wednesday. The oath was administered by the chief justice of the Telangana high court, Justice Alok Aradhe in a formal ceremony held at Raj Bhavan.

The event was attended by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti

Vikramarka, Cabinet ministers and senior officials. Chief secretary Santhi Kumari read out the warrant of appointment issued by the President of India, officially appointing Varma as the Telangana Governor. Union coal minister G. Kishan Reddy and various political party were present.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister welcomed Varma at the Shamshabad airport. Varma received a Guard of Honour from the armed police personnel.

Varma takes the place of C.P. Radhakrishnan, who shifts to Maharashtra as Governor. Radhakrishnan was serving as the interim Governor of Telangana, alongside his duties as the governor of Jharkhand, following the resignation of Tamilisai Soundararajan. She had stepped down to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

At 67, Jishnu Dev Varma becomes the fourth Governor of Telangana. All his predecessors — E.S.L. Narasimhan, Tamilisai Soundararajan, and C.P. Radhakrishnan — were from Tamil Nadu. Varma, who switched his allegiance from the Congress to the BJP in 1993, served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023. He contested the 2023 Assembly elections from Charilam in Sepahijala district but was defeated.

In a media statement, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said, “As your Governor, I pledge to uphold the principles of fairness, integrity and impartiality. I will discharge my duties with diligence, ensuring the democratic process and constitutional mandates are respected at all times.”

“It is my privilege to now serve the people of Telangana, a state renowned for its diverse cultures, rich heritage and unparalleled beauty,” he added.
