Odisha Woman’s Death Leads to Surrogacy Petition Withdrawal

Hyderabad: The accused in a surrogacy case, where a woman from Odisha had died last month, has withdrawn his petition for child through surrogacy from the High Court, said Raidurgam station house officer Ch Venkanna.

On the intervening night of November 25 and 26, a woman from Odisha, Ashitha Singh, had died in a bid to escape from the eighth floor of an apartment complex. She had been brought as a surrogate mother for the child of Rajesh Babu, real-estate businessman.

She allegedly faced harassment and died while escaping from the apartment. Rajesh Babu was booked for abetment to suicide. He was arrested and given bail the same day.

Police confirmed that the victim and her husband were not aware of the procedures of surrogacy and that the woman was unhappy with not being allowed to meet her husband.
