Hyderabad:Hyderabad was filled with patriotic fervour as the people celebrated the 78th Independence Day quite enthusiastically with a series of events on Thursday. The day was marked by some organisations parading with extra-long Flags, one of which was said to be 2.2 km long.

Apart from hoisting the National Flag, schools and colleges organised myriad cultural programmes. Children across institutions and all over were in the spotlight in attires bearing the Tricolour and those of freedom fighters. Housing apartments and gated communities celebrated the day with flag-hoisting ceremonies.

Almost every crossroad in the city, the statues of national leaders, as well as parks and playgrounds were turned into sites to hoist the Tricolour

Tank Bund was the hub of activities with a steady flow of individuals and families carrying the Tricolour. The atmosphere at Tank Bund remained enthusiastic and patriotic. Citizens paused to admire the statues of leaders, many of whom played pivotal roles in India's freedom struggle.

“It feels very nice being here. I showed all the statues to my kids and told them about their stellar contributions”, said Surender, a visitor from Kukatpally.

Meanwhile, people walked with a 100+ metres flag from Jalavihar to Necklace Road circle, while NCC cadets did likewise at Addagutta.

Actor Brahmanandam hoisted the National Flag at Begum Bazaar chatri and distributed school bags to children and wheelchairs to the physically-challenged in a symbolic gesture.

Later, bikers took out a Tricolour motorcycle rally at Begum Bazaar in the afternoon. Organised by the Bhagath Singh Yuva Sena, several people participated in the rally that passed through the bustling streets of Begum Bazaar chatri, Siddiamber Nazaar masjid, Gowliguda and before culminating at the Gowliguda gurudwara.
