In a letter to the Prime Minister, federation chairman Shailendra Duby and secretary general P. Rathnakar Rao said that they had sent a copy of the letter to the Chief Ministers of all the states and urged them to restore the OPS for the power sector employees.
They stated that the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), recently approved by the Union Cabinet, was not an alternative to the OPS as there are many discrepancies between them.
The federation also stated that the employees recruited after the dissolution of the state electricity boards had been deprived of pension in the power sector. There are different policies for employees in the power sector of different states and Union Territories.
Some power companies use Employees Provident Fund (EPF), while some have Central Provident Fund (CPF) or National Pension Scheme (NPS).
Now that the Centre had taken an initiative to provide pension to the employees covered under NPS, it was worth considering to bring a uniformity among the employees working in the power sector in different states, it said.
