Hyderabad: Heavy rainfall lashed various parts of Telangana on Sunday, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rains, which began in the late afternoon in Hyderabad, were heavy yet intermittent, causing significant disruption across the city and beyond.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the next five days, warning of continuous heavy rainfall due to a cyclone in circulation expected to form over the north-western Bay of Bengal.

In the GHMC limits, Bandlaguda, and Hayathnagar recorded the highest rainfall of 21.5 mm, followed by Lingojiguda and Rock Town Colony at 17.8 mm and 17.5 mm, respectively. Madhuranagar also saw significant rainfall of 17.3 mm.

The downpour led to waterlogging in several areas, including Vanasthalipuram and Prashanthnagar in LB Nagar circle, recording 14 mm of rain.

Lower but notable rainfall levels were observed in Uppal and Moosarambagh which recorded 12 mm and 6.5 mm, respectively. While some regions like Khadernagar and Santoshnagar received 3 mm of rain, others like Rooplal Bazar in Charminar saw minimal rainfall of 2.8 mm.

Elsewhere in the state, Mulugu district’s Medaram recorded the highest rainfall at 50.3 mm. This was followed by Duggondi in Warangal district, which saw 38.5 mm. Several regions in Nagarkurnool, including Yengampalli and Telkapalle, experienced heavy showers of 33.8 mm and 33.3 mm, respectively. In Ranga Reddy district, both Kandukur and Ibrahimpatnam registered 31.3 mm and 30 mm of rainfall.

The IMD warned that more heavy rain is expected in the coming days across districts such as Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, and Jayashankar Bhupalapally. A yellow alert has been issued for districts including Nizamabad, Jangaon, Siddipet, and Kamareddy for the next four days, with the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph.

Dr K. Nagaratna, the head of Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad, highlighted the risk of water pooling in low-lying areas, leading to potential traffic congestion, tree falls, and electricity disruptions. Residents are advised to avoid sheltering under trees and ensure that loose structures are secured. The municipal authorities have been urged to take immediate measures to clear clogged drains and prevent waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

Ashok Reddy, managing director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), has instructed officials to ensure the proper chlorination of water supplies to prevent contamination. Emergency Response Teams (ERT) and the Air Tech Mission have been deployed to address sewerage issues in flood-prone areas. Reddy also called for regular monitoring of frequently overflowing manholes and stressed the importance of clearing silt immediately after manhole cleaning operations.

In light of the heavy rainfall forecast, HMWSSB has also planned a special drive to construct and rehabilitate soak pits, set to begin on October 2. The weather department's forecast indicates a continuation of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days, with special advisories issued for all districts of Telangana. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and exercise caution during this period of heightened weather activity.
