The followers of the Roma, or Romuva, tradition, are indigenous people from Lithuania. Notably, Lithuania was the last European country to adopt Christianity under political violence and threats, but the rural heartlands have preserved many of their ancient rituals and practices.

The Roma people highlighted their enduring struggle to safeguard their cultural and spiritual identity and said Lokmanthan, a meeting of nationalist thinkers from the world’s biggest democracy, had given them an opportunity to display their cultural practices. They said that a performance at Lokmanthan showcased their commitment to keeping the rich ancient traditions alive amidst centuries of challenges.

The delegates also stated that their presence at the meet underscored the shared global narrative of Indigenous resilience and cultural revival.

The delegates told Deccan Chronicle that they embrace spiritual practices similar to Hindus that emphasise fate, fortune-telling and respect for the supernatural. Tarot reading, palmistry and foretelling are other common traditions. They pointed out that both Roma and Hindus have historically preserved their traditions, stories and histories orally.

The Roma community also follows the tradition by singing songs, storytelling and oral folklore, which mirrors the rich oral epics of Hindu culture, such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Both traditions prioritise family and community as central aspects of life, they said.

Roma families in Lithuania maintain tight-knit structures similar to Hindu joint families, emphasising the importance of loyalty, respect for elders and communal living. Roma attire and jewelry, particularly their bright colors, layered clothing and ornamental designs, echo the vibrancy seen in traditional Indian clothing.

Roma music in Lithuania is known for its expressive rhythms and passionate melodies, which have influences from their Indian roots. Some styles of Roma music bear a resemblance to Indian folk traditions, such as the use of improvisation and storytelling through song and dance.
