Karimnagar: A 50-year-old resident of Ailapur village, known for never wearing a shirt even during harsh winters, is referred to as ‘Gandhi’ for his distinctive habit. He has been living without a shirt since childhood and continues to defy the cold in Korutla mandal, Jagtial district.
He has been identified as Mukkera Bakkaiah, who rejected wearing shirts from an early age and upheld his choice despite numerous pleas from relatives and friends. Even after marrying in adulthood, he refused to change his stance.
In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Bakkaiah explained that he finds wearing a shirt uncomfortable, leading him to forgo it from childhood. He said he became used to living bare-chested and even sweats excessively when clothed, causing further irritation. Consequently, he chose never to don a shirt. During the harsh winter months, he relies on heavy blankets for warmth, finding them a more practical solution to keep himself protected from the cold. He believes they suffice well.
Former village sarpanch P. Radha told Deccan Chronicle that, throughout the seasons — bitter winters, rainy monsoons, or searing summers — Bakkaiah has remarkably never worn a shirt. Living alone without children or close kin, he steadfastly supports himself by working on his brother’s farmland. His unwavering routine has turned him into a well-known figure in the community.
Despite serving as a ward member, he roamed the locality without a shirt. According to Radha, he attended all official gatherings in a lungi with a kanduva draped over his shoulders, maintaining his shirtless custom in every setting.
Village secretary Rajendar, who once worked there, remarked that local residents dubbed him ‘Gandhi’ upon seeing him stride through the streets unclothed above the waist, a sight that garnered both much curiosity and occasional admiration.
Observers remain intrigued by his unconventional habit, questioning how anyone endures the region’s varied weather without upper-body clothing. According to officials, this resolute behaviour has made him a standout individual in his village, garnering widespread recognition and immense interest.
