Hyderabad: The Centre’s initiative to pump in Rs 68.1 crore into the Somasila wellness and spiritual retreat project in the Nallamala forests is intended to turn it into a major eco-friendly tourist and yoga destination spot like Rishikesh.

The endeavour is to uplift the local economy and preserving its environment.

Somasila, located on the Krishna 172 km from Hyderabad, is renowned for its group of 15 Lord Shiva temples, which date back to the seventh century. These temples are known for their intricate architecture and spiritual importance.

If executed in right earnest, the project could position Somasila as a model for blending spirituality with ecological preservation and tourism. The focus is on creating a hub for spiritual and wellness tourism, leveraging the natural beauty of the Nallamala forests and the spiritual significance of Somasila, located in Nagarkurnool district.

There will be an improved road connectivity, said an official who was earlier involved with Central tourist projects.

Like Rishikesh at Uttarakhand, recognised globally as yoga city, Somasila will also boast of eco-friendly wellness centres and retreat accommodation. With a number of hills, forests and an evergreen river, the area assures of a serene atmosphere.

The project is part of the Centre’s push to promote lesser-known tourism sites.

In the works

Ayurvedic centres, yoga studios and naturopathy clinics.

Centre to develop facilities to host cultural festivals, besides restoring and beautifying ancient temples in the vicinity.

Emphasis on sustainable development of forest region, preserving local biodiversity.

Boating services to be improved

Eco-friendly accommodations like waterfront cottages.
