Telangana Assembly Passes Bill to Set Up Skill University
Hyderabad: The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a Bill for setting up Young India Skill University-Telangana, inspired by the nameof Mahatma Gandhi’s journal for youths. Hours later, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus of the university at Meerkhanpet on the city outskirts.
Industries minister D Sridhar Babu moved the Bill and the House took up a discussion on it. Speaking on the Bill, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said that drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who started an English journal ‘Young India’, during the freedom struggle, the Telangana government had named the varsity as "Young India Skill University."
After the Bill was passed and the House adjourned for the day, Reddy proceeded to Meerkhanpet in Kanduru mandal and laid the foundation for the construction of the university’s campus. The event marked the beginning of an ambitious project that is aimed at transforming the region into a hub for education, healthcare, and employment.
"The establishment of this university is part of a larger plan to develop this region and provide jobs to our youth," he said. The CM emphasised the government's commitment to creating a new city in Mucherla on Pharma City land, which will include a range of facilities such as education, healthcare and employment opportunities.
Revanth Reddy also laid foundations for several key infrastructure projects on the occasion, including the advanced technology centre, a modern school, PHC and a community centre. These facilities are expected to play a crucial role in the development of the area and in providing essential services to the local community.
Drawing inspiration from Jawaharlal Nehru's emphasis on education and irrigation, the Chief Minister highlighted the historical efforts of the Congress in bringing drinking water to Hyderabad by lifting waters from Godavari and Krishna rivers.
He stated that the new university would offer skill development training to thousands of young people and guaranteed job placements. Several companies have already expressed interest in partnering with the university to offer training and employment opportunities, Reddy said.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister revealed plans to build an advanced city that surpasses even New York in its scope and facilities. The area is set to become a hub for health tourism and sports, he said.
To ensure that the development benefits all, the Chief Minister assured that families displaced by the project would receive fair compensation.
In terms of infrastructure, the government has ambitious plans, including the construction of a 200-foot road linking the new city to the airport and extension of the metro rail network.
The Chief Minister pointed out that former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy had developed the Outer Ring Road in Hyderabad. Building on his legacy, the Congress government would commence work on the Regional Ring Road (RRR) within three months.
The skill varsity will start with six of the scheduled 15 courses. Around 2, 000 youth will receive training this year, the Chief Minister added.
