Khammam: Minister for agriculture Tummala Nageshwar Rao on Tuesday said that horticulture farmers would be encouraged to sell their produce directly in the market to earn more money.

Laying the foundation stone for construction of sheds and stalls in the old agriculture market in Khammam at an estimated cost of Rs 40.5 lakh, the minister said the state government will provide facilities and allocate stalls to vegetable farmers in the markets to sell their produce to people without middlemen.

He said the middlemen system does not only eat into the income of farmers, it also causes a hike in prices of vegetables. He instructed officials to discourage middlemen in marketing of vegetables.

He said direct sale of vegetables by farmers would also facilitate people to get fresh vegetables. It would benefit both farmers and consumers, he maintained.

He reminded that vegetables would always have demand in the market and the rise and fall in their prices would depend on yield quantity and weather condition.

He said that basic amenities would be developed in newly set up colonies in Khammam Municipal Corporation. Due to his efforts, the state government has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for Khammam for this purpose.

He promised to provide facilities in newly set up colonies and villages which were merged in the corporation. He directed officials not to compromise on quality of work which would be taken up with Rs 100 crore.

He asked officials to allocate house numbers to houses in YSR Nagar Colony as per the rule and sanction electricity connections to them.

Earlier, the minister laid the foundation stone for CC roads taken up in YSR Nagar Colony with Rs 40.1 lakh. Khammam mayor Punukollu Neeraja and officials attended the programme.
