Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has ruled in favour of medical and dental students who completed their schooling in other states but earned their MBBS or BDS degrees in Telangana. These students were previously deemed ineligible for postgraduate (PG) medical counseling within the state due to Government Order No. 148, which states that students must have completed their schooling within Telangana to be considered local residents.

This regulation left many students in a difficult position, as they were not recognised as locals in their home states either. Effectively, they were considered "non-locals" everywhere.
The High Court, recognising the inequity of this situation, has ruled that these students should be considered local for the purpose of PG medical counseling in Telangana. The court has advised the state government to amend GO No. 148 accordingly to reflect this decision.
