Hyderabad: Telangana has emerged as the leading state in India for alcohol sales, with residents spending more per capita on liquor than in any other state, according to a recent survey by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP).
On average, each resident in Telangana spends Rs 1,623 on alcohol, while in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the per capita spending is Rs 1,306.
The survey also revealed that other states such as Punjab (Rs 1,245) and Chhattisgarh (Rs 1,227) have relatively high alcohol expenditures, while states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, and Madhya Pradesh report lower per capita spending on liquor.
Telangana has around 2,620 licensed wine shops and over a thousand bars and pubs across the state. During the recent Dasara festival, the state recorded liquor sales worth over Rs 1,000 crore, with approximately 11 lakh
cases of liquor and 18 lakh cases of beer sold, according to official estimates. The survey further noted that Telangana leads the southern states in beer sales, with a staggering 302.84 lakh beers sold between
April and October this year, while Andhra Pradesh reported 169 lakh beer sales during the same period.
This high level of consumption reflects both the state’s growing market for alcoholic beverages and its position as a key revenue generator in the southern region.
