Hyderabad: The excise department has formed 78 special teams to address the growing drug menace, said excise and enforcement DG V.B. Kamalasan Reddy.

"We have formed zone-wise special task force (STF) teams and district-wise district task force (DTF) teams across the state. We are prepared to tackle any challenges posed by deadly drugs," Kamalasan Reddy stated.

The newly-formed STF and DTF teams are supervised by DSPs, along with two additional DSPs from law and order police, one additional SP, and two excise superintendent-level officers, he added.

While reviewing the annual performance of the STF and DTF teams on Thursday, Reddy directed officers to identify more hotspots and increase frisking operations at checkposts in various districts. He highlighted that the STF teams deployed in the GHMC area were focusing on individuals involved in smuggling, peddling, selling and consuming ganja, NDPS drugs, non-duty-paid liquor and other intoxicants.

Kamalasan Reddy urged team members to actively gather intelligence and uphold professional ethics in their work. He emphasised the importance of identifying repeat offenders and initiating the PD Act proceedings against them to further curb the NDPS drug problem.

Kamalasan Reddy also instructed officers to conduct regular surprise checks on trains, particularly those arriving from other states. He stressed the need for frequent raids to monitor drug use in pubs and strengthen inter-state operations to control narcotics trafficking.
