Hyderabad: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has lifted the ban on the Progressive Students’ Forum (PSF) and amended the controversial ‘Honour Code’, following weeks of organised student resistance. Several student organisations, including Students' Federation of India (SFI), which led the protests, hailed this outcome as a victory for student movements nationwide, marking a moment of inspiration for student mobilisation across India’s deemed universities.

The ban on PSF, imposed on August 19, 2024, came after the suspension of Ramadas Prini Sivanandan, a dalit PhD scholar and member of the SFI central executive committee. TISS labelled the PSF as an 'unauthorised’ and ‘illegal’ forum, accusing it of misleading students and defaming the institute.

The move was seen as a direct attempt to curb student opposition to the policies of the BJP-led government and the university’s administration. Shortly after, a new Honour Code was introduced, which prohibited political discussions, protests, or any form of 'anti-establishment' activities. This new code ignited further discontent among students, who viewed it as an assault on free speech and academic freedom.

The student community, particularly members of the PSF, swiftly mobilised in opposition, backed by the SFI and various other student groups, trade unions, and civil society organisations. They led nationwide protests, urging all sections of society to stand in defence of campus democracy. Their efforts proved successful as TISS eventually relented, lifting the ban on PSF and revising the Honour Code.

Student leaders, especially those at the forefront of the protests, V.P. Sanu and Mayukh Biswas, commended the TISS students for their determination in standing against authoritarian measures. They emphasised that while this is a major step forward, the need for vigilance remains critical to safeguard academic freedom and student rights. "This victory is as a symbol of hope for students in other universities who are also fighting for their rights and freedoms," Sanu said.
