Top Hyderabad Hospitals Lack Fire Safety Certifications: CAG

Hyderabad: Top government hospitals in the city, including Osmania General Hospital and MNJ Cancer Hospital, which have thousands of in-patients and out-patients daily, apart from their attendants and hospital staff, are not safe in case of fire accidents.

The Comptroller and Auditor General's report tabled in the Assembly on Friday stated that these hospitals mentioned above along with Niloufer Hospital and King Koti District Hospital had not obtained a 'no objection certificate’ from the competent fire authorities.

MNJ Cancer Hospital and the Golconda area hospital were found to be not having any firefighting equipment.

Fire accidents in any hospital can be dangerous as it involves the complexity of evacuating patients who are oftentimes immobile. The BRS government's role in these glaring lapses is startling.

The National Building Code of India mandates fire extinguishers in every hospital to ensure the safety of patients, attendants, visitors and hospital staff. Further, as per the guidelines of the Indian Public Health Standards 2012, 'No Objection Certificate' has to be obtained from the competent fire authority to protect the patients, attendants, doctors and other staff and the properties of the hospital from any fire incidents.
