Visakhapatnam: Quick action by lifeguards with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) prevented a tragedy at RK Beach on Sunday. The lifeguards successfully rescued a 16-year-old girl, Sudha, who was caught in a rip current and pulled into deeper water.

Sudha had come to the beach with friends for a swim when the incident occurred.

Fortunately, lifeguards Anand, Vasu, and Atchanna were vigilant and spotted her struggle. Without hesitation, they sprang into action, diving into the water to bring her back to safety.

This heroic rescue highlights the vital role lifeguards play in ensuring beach safety. Earlier this year, during Holi celebrations, the same team rescued four young men from a similar situation at Appikonda Beach.

“Lakhs of people visit our beaches every year,” said GVMC commissioner C.M. Saikanth Varma. While enjoying a swim, many underestimate the dangers of rip currents and enter the water without proper caution. The commissioner emphasised the importance of public awareness. Despite billboards warning tourists and locals about the risks, some disregard them, putting themselves at risk. He urged visitors to exercise caution and avoid swimming in areas with strong currents.
